Universidad de Concepción gives acknowledgment to the most outstanding professors of the last 20 years.
The Vice Rectory of Research and Development, on its aim to promote cientific work in the university and its contribution to the country, organized a ceremony in honour of outstanding researchers in their fields, both in their prolific careers over the last 20 years, as their participation in Conicyt projects.
In the “Jaime Bizama” auditorium of the building EmpreUdeC, deans and university authorities made the appointment to honour the researchers with the most extensive experience in this university, including astronomers Wolfgang Gieren and Douglas Geisler, who stand with Dr. Bernabé Rivas as the 3 most prolific researchers in scientific publications of the University.
Joining them, the deserved recognition was given also to Dr. Juanita Freer from the Biotechnology Center, Dr. José Becerra from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Dr. Lohengrin Cavieres from the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Dr. Gabriel Gatica, Director of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering, Dr. Daniel González, associate professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Patricio Reyes, professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and the posthumous recognition to Dr. Hugo Segura, renowned professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universidad de Concepción.
“These instances are very rewarding, but the truth is that there are many people behind a recognition like this, starting with the family that is the fundamental support so one can do such activities. On the other hand is the research group, considering undergraduate and graduate students, technicians, laborantes, etc., who support us in everything we do”, said Vice Rector Bernabé Rivas.
On their part, Dr. Geisler and Dr. Gieren, both from the Department of Astronomy and also foreigners, highlighted Chile like the best country in the world to be an astronomer, explaining that with the infrastructure projects that are in process, in eight or ten years more we are going to have the 70% of the world’s infrastructure in astronomy. “Besides being in a place with the best skies for astronomy, we perform in the most beautiful field, which also helps to be calmed and happy and thus be very productive”, considered Geisler.
